Classes
Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification (PAAC)
This program is a mutually beneficial educational program for avocational and professional archaeologists. Established in 1978 by the Colorado Archaeological Society (CAS) and the Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado (OSAC), it allows CAS members and other citizens to obtain formally recognized levels of expertise outside of an academic degree program. It also facilitates avocational public service and assistance in education, governmental management of cultural resources, research, and the protection of archaeological resources in Colorado.

In honor of Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month, join us as we visit the town of Berthoud and learn how its historic properties, downtown commercial district and surrounding neighborhoods are celebrated and preserved. We’ll visit several sites that received preservation grants from the State Historical Fund, such as the Masonic Building, the First National Bank of Berthoud/Town Hall and Bimson Blacksmith Shop, listed on the National Register. $21 History Colorado members, $26 nonmembers.
Keota and Pawnee Buttes Tour
Saturday, June 9, 9 A.M. to 3 P.M.
Explore the stories of homesteaders on the plains on this tour of the Pawnee National Grasslands and Keota. U.S. Forest Service archaeologist, Nicole Branton, will lead a tour of the grasslands with a stop at one of the Eastern Plains’ most prominent landmarks, Pawnee Buttes. Branton will discuss the homesteaders in the region and how they responded to the harsh environment. You will even see the archaeological site of one of the homesteads. Following lunch, History Colorado’s Director of Education, JJ Rutherford, will lead a tour of Keota, a town that flourished in the early twentieth century because of the Homestead Act and the railroad. Learn how Keota reflects the story of Colorado: boom and bust, drought and plenty, dreams and reality. Be prepared for easy walking as we explore. $36 History Colorado members, $46 nonmembers. Price includes lunch, all fees and interpretation. Graduate credit for teachers is available with additional half-day workshop. Contact April Legg to register at 303-866-4688.
