Heckendorn Preservation Collection

The Heckendorn Preservation Collection is a special research center of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. The collection is named in honor of the late Dale A. Heckendorn, a former State and National Register Coordinator and respected colleague who donated his personal collection of books to the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP). The collection offers a small holding of books, newsletters, journals, pamphlets and articles relevant to:

  • architecture. Including unique popular styles and mid-century designs
  • prehistory of Colorado. Including regional overviews, techniques and out-of-state materials
  • history. Including books related to the general history of a particular architectural style
  • historic preservation. Including renovation and restoration techniques with examples from around the country

The collection is unique, offering books and journals that are hard to find anywhere else. There is also a small semi-permanent holding of newsletters, journals and magazines including:

  • Old House Journal
  • Preservation Law Reporter
  • Preservation
  • Preservation Forum
  • Teaching with Historic Places

It also offers a semi-complete holdings of such journals as:

  • American Antiquity
  • Historic Archaeology
  • Kiva
  • Plains Anthropologist
  • Southwestern Lore

Books cannot be checked out but you are welcome to come and use the collection within OAHP. Please make an appointment to view the collection by calling 303-866-3395 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m, Monday through Friday. The collection is located at:
