History Colorado, Blair Caldwell Library, and Zion Baptist Church Celebrate Lincoln Hills

Saturday, February 25, 2012 - 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Lincoln Hills, a black-owned mountain resort west of Boulder, offered a haven for African Americans during the Jim Crow era. Amenities such as the YWCA’s Camp Nizhoni for girls and Wink's Tavern and Lodge provided outdoor experiences and an escape from segregated Denver. Descendants of original landowners still own property there.

On Saturday, February 25, join State Historian Bill Convery for a sneak peek of the Lincoln Hills exhibit, on view at the new History Colorado Center, opening April 28. Education program developer donnie l. betts will preview a museum theater piece he created for the exhibit.

History Colorado, Denver Public Library, and Zion Baptist Church are collecting stories and images related to Lincoln Hills for the Creating Your Community website that will launch on March 20.Creating Your Community is a social archive where you can explore, get connected, and share your stories and photos about Colorado. Bring your Lincoln Hills photos to the program and DPL staff will digitize them for you. (We can scan up to three items no larger than 8.5” X 11.7”; a USB drive will be provided.)

And don’t forget to check the March/April Colorado Heritage magazine for a feature article on Lincoln Hills.
