The Importance of Music and the Arts to a Movement - History Colorado Center

Monday, April 29, 2013 - 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Color photograph of Rutha Harris. With Rutha Harris and Urban Method

Rutha Harris is a founding member of the Freedom Singers, an a cappella ensemble that traveled 50,000 miles to forty-eight states in nine months, singing and telling stories of the Civil Rights Movement.  Born in Albany, Georgia, in 1940, Harris began singing at the age eight at that city's Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.  She got involved in the Albany Civil Rights Movement in 1961 and was among those incarcerated in the mass arrests that filled the Albany and surrounding counties' jails in December of that year.  The evening's conversation includes excerpts from the film Soundtrack for a Revolution.

The immersion of method acting meets raw, real music for a high-power blast of music from the mouth. The magnetic Urban Method lives in Denver and met recording at Sonic Audio downtown. They will sing their own renditions of four songs from the movement over the course of the evening.
