Lecture - Colorado’s Historical Water Wars: Why Whiskey is for Drinkin’ and Water is for Fightin’ 1PM
Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 1:00pm - 2:00pmColorado adopted the prior appropriation doctrine, or “first in time, first in right,” with respect to water prior to statehood. That doctrine, combined with our dry climate and unique geology, laid the groundwork for epic battles over water rights. The battles have included fights between farmers and cities, between those who want to store water and those who want to protect the environment from large-scale dam building, and between water users on opposite sides of the Divide.
Join Boulder water attorney Kevin Kinnear as he delves into these struggles, including Aurora’s Rocky Ford Ditch transfer, Denver’s Two Forks Dam, and the constant tug-of-war between the Colorado River and the Front Range’s unquenchable thirst.
