Architects of Colorado - Biographical Series

Thousands of men and women have shaped and reshaped Colorado's cultural landscape over the last 10,000 years.  Those responsible for these changes include hunters, farmers, masons, carpenters, engineers and architects.  Some received formal training in design and construction, others practiced centuries old traditions passed from one generation to the next.  Some designed to meet their own needs, others worked to fill the needs of others.  Many Colorado designers and builders will remain unnamed, known only by the buildings, structures, and sites they left behind.

No guide to these individuals could ever hope to be all inclusive.  This ever-expanding Architects of Colorado biographical series focuses on individual architects and landscape architects who practiced professionally in Colorado after 1860.  In addition to a short biographical sketch, a list of credited buildings, structures, and sites is provided.  This information is based largely on the files in the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, particularly National Register and State Register nomination documentation and the Site Files cultural resource database.  The narratives are in PDF format, so if you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, you can download it free directly from Adobe.

Even in the case of the most well-known and well-documented Colorado architects, new research regularly uncovers additional biographical information and identifies previously unknown works.  We welcome information, corrections, and comments regarding the architects recognized here, or information concerning any of Colorado's architects.  Additional biographies will be added on a regular basis as information and time permits.
