Frederick Bancroft

Known for his love of the whole land and spirit of Colorado, Dr. Frederick J. Bancroft had the foresight to attempt to preserve that which he so greatly admired by helping to found the State Historical and Natural History Society of Colorado in 1879. From his arrival in Denver in 1866 to his death in 1903, Bancroft strove to improve the quality of life in Denver and the surrounding areas. It has been said of the 6-foot-four, 300-pound man that “he was as good a fellow as he was big.” His legacy of generosity and a commitment to make history matter will forever be part of who we are and what we strive to achieve.
