The Emerging Historians Award

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student at a Colorado college or university? Or were you one during the last academic year? Would you like to see your writing published in The
Colorado Magazine, the magazine of History Colorado? Would you like to win $500? Then check out the Emerging Historians Award!

Members of our State Historian’s Council and History Colorado staff will evaluate each entry, and the winning essays in undergraduate and graduate categories will be published in The
Colorado Magazine. Winning authors will receive a $500 cash prize. The contest is open to Colorado undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the time of entry or in the previous academic year.

The deadline to submit your essay is June 1, 2024. To submit your essay, go to h-co.org/emerging or send it to Publications@state.co.us.

What We’re Looking For

The Colorado Magazine is for readers with a broad interest in Colorado history. We’re looking for annotated, illustrated essays of 4,000 words or less, written with the general reader in mind and on any topic related to Colorado’s recent or distant past—preferably tying the past to the present. Submissions must include at least three but up to six high resolution (at least 1MB file size) images with captions and credits.
