Research Services

A research service is available for patrons who are unable to visit the library in person. The service is priced per hour of research time and includes up to 5 copied or scanned pages of relevant material. Due to staffing constraints, we are only able to devote up to 2 hours of research per request.

The first 15 minutes of research is complimentary. If further research is required, the following fees apply:

History Colorado Member (please note Member ID# in request) First hour is free with up to 5 scanned pages* included; $10 each additional hour.
Colorado Resident $20/hour with up to 5 scanned pages included*
Out-of-State Individual $30/hour with up to 5 scanned pages included*
Commercial $50 per hour

*Use, distribution, or publication of reproductions requires written permission from History Colorado. The patron is responsible for compliance with copyright laws. Use of images of or from History Colorado collections may require a fee.

Reproduction Services

History Colorado charges commercial and non-profit users fees in order to support the maintenance of the collection. Fees are charged for both reproduction and use. Possession of reproductions of History Colorado materials does not constitute permission for use. Please see our Image Use Policy for more information.

Orders must be accompanied by prepayment by cash, check (made out to History Colorado), credit card, or money order. Estimated shipping time is 1-3 weeks from receipt of signed Collections Use Agreement and payment. Rush orders for 1-3 day turnaround double the price of each photo ordered. All applicable sales taxes and shipping and handling fees are charged.

Use Fees

In addition to reproduction fees, use fees are charged for use of images of and from History Colorado collections and are calculated per still image. All details and description of use must be included in a signed Collections Use Agreement.
Fees may be waived or reduced for Colorado non-profit organizations, university presses engaging in non-commercial publication, and for Colorado news media.

Moving Image Products, Services, and Use Pricing

History Colorado charges commercial and non-profit users use fees in order to support the maintenance of the collection. Possessing reproductions of History Colorado materials does not constitute permission for use. Please see our Moving Image Use Policy for more information.

Use fees are applied to any use or product. Fees will be assessed at a 50% discount for non-profit organizations, and may be reduced or waived for Colorado news media. Proof of non-profit status must be provided.

Any licensing and shipping and handling fees are paid directly to History Colorado, and are in addition to any potential digitization cost payable to History Colorado's selected third-party contractor. Payment may be made with cash, check, credit card, or money order. Please make checks or money orders payable to History Colorado.

Microfilm Reel Duplication

History Colorado collects and preserves historic and current newspapers published in Colorado. Most newspapers in the collection are available in 35mm positive microfilm format for use at the Stephen H. Hart Research Center. Duplicate reels, created from master negatives, may be requested for individual research or library use. For this service, please:

  • Contact the Assistant Curator of Serials at cosearch@state.co.us for information on titles and dates available for duplication.
  • Submit duplication requests using this form. 
  • After submitting your request, an invoice/use agreement will be generated and sent via DocuSign. Please sign, return, and prepay by check, money order, or credit card.
  • Orders generally ship within 5 to 7 weeks after receipt of payment.

Standing orders may be placed for microfilm of current newspapers. Duplicate reels will be shipped and billed as newly microfilmed titles become available. Please contact the Assistant Curator of Serials at cosearch@state.co.us to learn more about creating a standing order.

Duplicate reels of History Colorado microfilm are intended for research or library use only. Duplicate reels may not be reproduced, sold, digitized, published, or provided to another repository without written permission from History Colorado.
