The Stephen H. Hart Research Center provides a variety of services for your research and reproduction needs, including reproductions of photos in our collection (with associated usage fees), microfilm duplication, and virtual assistance. Request a Reproduction

High-quality reproductions are available for personal or commercial use. You can search for photos in History Colorado's Online Collection or use the Index to the Subject File Collection. Please contact us at cosearch@state.co.us for more information or download the Reproduction Request Form.  Reproduction fees, use fees, and policies are listed below. Please note that it takes approximately 5 to 7 business days to fulfill an order from our digital studio once we have set up the use agreement and receive payment. If you require your images before that time, a rush fee of double the charge will apply.

Use Fees

In addition to reproduction fees, use fees are charged for use of images of and from History Colorado collections and are calculated per still image. All details and description of use must be included in a signed Collections Use Agreement. Fees may be waived or reduced for Colorado non-profit organizations, university presses engaging in non-commercial publication, and for Colorado news media.

There is no use fee for personal or research use of History Colorado materials.

Use Policies

Obtaining images of the collection, exhibits, or properties requires compliance with the History Colorado collections use conditions as described here and in the Collections Use Agreement completed at time of purchase.

Image Use Policy
  1. The user assumes responsibility for questions of copyright that may arise. History Colorado does not claim copyright for all collection materials.
  2. History Colorado departmental policies determine access to and photography of its artifacts, exhibits, and properties.
  3. History Colorado reserves the right to restrict use or reproduction of rare or valuable material; to ensure that reproductions are of high quality and in good taste; and that the use is consistent with the mission of History Colorado and donor stipulations.
  4. Images may be used only as described in the Collections Use Agreement. Permission is granted when the Collections Use Agreement is signed and dated by both parties, all fees are paid, and all conditions have been met.
  5. Rights for single, one-time use are granted unless otherwise stated on the Collections Use Agreement, and further use of any kind requires written permission and may require additional fees. Rights are not transferable without written permission.
  6. Published or publicly displayed images must be credited as described in the Collections Use Agreement. Credit must accompany the image in a caption or display label, or on a credit page or screen, to read: "Collection Name, Collection # (Scan #), History Colorado." A signed a fully paid Collections Use Agreement must be completed for permission to use images to be final.
  7. Images to be displayed on the internet must be obtained directly from History Colorado, and will be at a resolution of 100 dpi. In some cases, permission may be granted to resize a previously purchased high resolution file to 100 dpi for online display. The image credit must appear on the page or screen on which the image appears.
  8. Requests for image adjustment such as cropping, detail shots, or cleanup of historical images must be made in writing. Photo studio staff are available to discuss the final product and provide an estimate of cost.
  9. History Colorado requests a complimentary copy of any non-serial publication using collection materials. After receipt of complimentary copies, curatorial staff determine which items fall within the scope of History Colorado's Collection Plan and will be added to the collection.
  10. In addition to reproduction fees, additional fees may be charged for use, dependent upon type of use intended. Use fees may be waived for Colorado non-profit organizations, university presses engaging in non-commercial publications, or for the use of photographs by Colorado news media.
  11. Images may not be resold, re-used, transferred, or donated to another individual or repository without written permission from History Colorado.

Moving Image Use Policy

History Colorado does not hold copyright for all items in the moving image collection. Any questions of copyright that arise are the responsibility of the user. History Colorado will endeavor to provide as much copyright information as it possesses for any given item. Departmental policies determine access to collection items. History Colorado reserves the right to restrict reproduction or use of rare or valuable material, and to ensure that any use is consistent with the mission of History Colorado and any donor stipulations. 

  1. Moving image footage may be used only as described in the Collections Use Agreement. For footage requiring digitization, payment for all shipping & handling must be received in advance of moving image collection items being sent to History Colorado’s preferred contractor.

  4. Footage may not be resold, reused, transferred, or donated to another individual or repository without written permission from History Colorado.
  5. For digitized footage, licensing fees are assessed on a per-second basis, the intended use, distribution, and the non-profit status of the user. At this time we are only able to provide the full high resolution file and patrons must pay a reproduction fee for those files based on running time. Licensing fees are assessed only for actual footage used.
  6. For footage requiring digitization, licensing fees are assessed on a per-item basis. These fees are non-refundable and History Colorado makes no guarantee as to the content or condition of the film or video to be transferred. Users are responsible for all costs of digitization, including any necessary preservation work, and digital master and access copies for History Colorado’s collection. Digitization costs are payable directly to History Colorado’s preferred third-party contractor and are in addition to any licensing fees payable to History Colorado. In certain cases, it may be possible to receive more information about a film or video and a price quote from the third-party contractor prior to paying licensing fees to History Colorado.

Delivery Method
  • Select the shipping/delivery method that works best for you during the online shopping process.  
  • You may choose to pick-up your order during Research Center hours, Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. 
  • Digital files will be sent file via Google Drive
  • For security reasons we cannot copy files onto disks or flash drives provided by customers.
Processing and Delivery 
  • When your order is received, we will first check to be sure that the image can be copied, according to our guidelines, copyright restrictions, etc.  
  • If we need to pull the item for digitization, this may either take additional time and/or a Studio Photo Shoot fee of $50/image that items that cannot be scanned.
  • Non-Rush orders will be completed within 7 days of permission being granted for copying.  
  • Rush orders will be completed in 1-3 business days from the date of permission.  Rush service is available for an added fee of 100% of the cost per image.

Microfilm Duplication

History Colorado collects and preserves historic and current newspapers published in Colorado. Most newspapers in the collection are available in 35mm positive microfilm format for use at the Stephen H. Hart Research Center. Duplicate reels, created from master negatives, may be requested for individual research or library use. For this service, please:

  • Contact the Assistant Curator of Serials at cosearch@state.co.us for information on titles and dates available for duplication or to submit a request for microfilm duplication.
  • After submitting your request, an use agreement will be sent for signature via Adobe. Invoices will be sent via Shopify.
  • Orders generally ship within 5 to 7 weeks after receipt of payment.
Microfilm Duplication

  • $5 per reel additional shipping charge

Standing orders may be placed for microfilm as titles become available. Please contact the Assistant Curator of Serials at cosearch@state.co.us to learn more about creating a standing order.

We cannot process any image or microfilm duplication orders until payment is received.

Research Services

If you are unable to visit the Research Center in person, we offer research service for the History Colorado collection including manuscripts, film, artifacts, and photography.

Requests requiring under 15 minutes of staff time are complimentary; staff will notify you if additional research time will be needed and request payment according to the fee structure below prior to continuing research. Due to limited resources, we may not be able to fulfill all research requests. 

Payment for one hour’s worth of research is required at the time of the request. Additional charges may apply for copying and shipping. We will make every attempt to assist you, but please be aware that paying for research does not guarantee we will be able to find the information requested.
