The area’s original inhabitants were Native people, including the Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and other Tribes who from time immemorial have gathered at the base of the mountains, enjoyed the waters of nearby Manitou Springs, and explored among the red rocks.
Iconic Pikes Peak rises above a region full of extraordinary natural features like the thrilling Royal Gorge, the stunning Garden of the Gods, and the breathtaking Collegiate Peaks Scenic Byway. Natural splendor combines with vibrant cities and charming small towns to create a region with endless possibilities. Visit Pueblo for namesake chile dishes, strolls along the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk, and the iconic State Fair. Or take a journey into the past in the historic mining towns of Victor and Cripple Creek. Buena Vista and Salida offer the chance to enjoy the region's small towns and their unique character along with their incredible natural hot springs. No trip to this region is complete without a stop at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, home to one of the richest and most diverse fossil deposits in the world.

Central Colorado’s commemorative efforts are being coordinated by Local Organizing Committees, made up of community members and local leaders.
