The high country

People have been drawn to Colorado’s high country since time immemorial, when the Nuche, also known as the Ute, spent summers in the cool of the mountains. Today, people are still drawn to the spectacular mountain landscapes, and Colorado’s central high country has become a year-round home for many and an all-season destination for many more seeking recreation in the Rockies.

Celebrated worldwide for its ski destinations,  the high country adventures don’t end when the snow melts. Experience the thrill of white water rafting, conquer mountain biking trails, embark on breathtaking hikes, challenge yourself with rock climbing, or perfect your swing on our world class golf courses. This region also includes numerous historic mining towns, from Silver Plume to Leadville to Redstone, each with its own unique story.

Known for its unparalleled destinations, the Colorado high country is also home to long-standing communities, including working ranches and farms that have been here for generations. Camp Hale, the training grounds for the Army’s legendary 10th Mountain Division, invites you to test yourself on the same trails that prepared those winter warriors. This region is full of breathtaking views, vibrant small towns with rich histories, and people who know how to play as hard as they work.
