Visit our Research Center

The Stephen H. Hart Research Center is open to the public, and free of charge.

Hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The research center will be closed on July 4, 2019.

We do not require appointments or advance arrangements to visit the research center. It is located on the 2nd floor of the History Colorado Center at 1200 Broadway. Researchers use the main entrance on Broadway. Click here for parking information. When you arrive, please check in at the Concierge Desk in the main lobby of the History Colorado Center. The Concierge will issue a free ticket that will allow you to visit the reserach center without paying museum admission. Stephen H. Hart Research Center tickets do not include admission to museum exhibits.

Researchers fill out a registration form when visiting the Stephen H. Hart Research Center. Please bring photo identification. Depending on your topic, a research visit might last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more. All materials are used in the Janis Falkenberg Reading Room. Staff retrieve requested materials for researchers. Materials cannot be checked out. See below for a list of items allowed and not allowed into the reading room. What to bring into the reading room:

Loose paper, pencil, laptop computer or tablet, camera, photo identification.
Please turn your cell phone to silent.
Bring a flash drive if you’d like to save scans from microfilm.

What may not be brought into the reading room:

Food and drink, candy, gum, water bottles, scanners, tripods, outerwear, umbrellas, folders, notebooks, binders, handbags, backpacks, briefcases.  

Searching our Catalog

Search our online collection catalogs on the main collections page to find call numbers for materials you would like to see. Look at our research tools for possible items of interest. We have photograph indexes available online or in the reading room.

If you plan to use a manuscript collection during your visit, please contact the research center to request a collection inventory or finding aid prior to your visit.

In addition to archives and photographs, artifacts are available through our research center. Advance notice for certain objects may be required. To see a selection of our artifacts, visit

Research center staff is available during open hours to help you find materials of interest. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions about our holdings or would like guidance in your research.

Our collection does not include government records, such as birth, death, marriage, probate, police, school, state, territorial, or land records. Our staff can help you determine where such records are located and how to access them.

Research Center Services

Complimentary WiFi is available. Computers are also available for catalog and internet access. Complimentary lockers are provided outside the reading room for personal belongings. Items too large for the lockers can be left with the Security Department on the 1st floor.

Research Services

If you are unable to visit the Research Center in person, we offer research service for the History Colorado collection. Research Requests are used for all of the collection including manuscripts, film, artifacts, photography, etc. Requests requiring under 15 minutes of staff time are complementary and additional research time will fall under the fee structure below. Staff will contact you if additional research time is needed. Due to limited resources, we may not be able to fulfill all research requests.

Non-Members: $20/hour-CO residents with up to 5 scanned pages included* $30/hour-Out of state with up to 5 scanned pages included*

Payment for 1 hour’s worth of research is required at the time of the request. Additional charges may apply for copying and shipping. We will make every attempt to assist you, but please be aware that paying for research does not guarantee we will be able to find the information requested. We accept checks and major credit cards. Credit card information can be provided by phone at 303-866-2305, emailed to, or mailed to the Research Center at 1200 Broadway Denver, CO 80203. Please use this Credit Card Authorization form.

*Use, distribution, or publication of reproductions requires written permission from History Colorado. The patron is responsible for compliance with copyright laws. Use of images of or from History Colorado collections may require a fee.

Copy Services

Visitors may use their own cameras to photograph most collection materials for personal research. We are also able to offer photocopies of many collection materials for a fee. Use the Research Request form and the Credit Card Authorization form to start an order. Copies are usually ready within 3-5 business days and can be delivered via mail or email and large orders may take longer to complete. Copy requests that would violate copyright laws or Collections Use Policies will not be accepted.

Reproduction Services

You can order a reproduction of most items in the collection. Use the Research Request form and the Credit Card Authorization form to start an order. Fees are charged for both reproduction and use. Possession of reproductions of History Colorado materials does not constitute permission for use. Estimated shipping time is 2-3 weeks or more from receipt of signed Collections Use Agreement and payment. Please see our fees and our policies for more information.

Microfilm and Reel Duplication

History Colorado collects and preserves historic and current newspapers published in Colorado. Most newspapers are available in 35 mm positive microfilm format. Cost of copies is 25 cents per page. We also have microfilm reader/scanners, which allow PDF scans to be made from microfilm. PDF scans are free of charge. Click here for more information about fees.

To order a duplicate reel, contact our staff at for information on titles and dates available for duplication. Delivery time is 5 to 7 weeks. Duplicate reels of History Colorado microfilm are intended for research or research center use only. Duplicate reels may not be reproduced, sold, digitized, published, or provided to another repository without written permission from History Colorado.
