The significance of the Stephen H. Hart Awards has evolved over the years; yet, the sole purpose is to recognize Colorado’s great history through outstanding archaeology and historic preservation projects.
The Stephen H. Hart Awards celebrates and recognizes exemplary projects in archaeology and historic preservation across the state. Each project contributes innovated techniques and advances in the preservation field through in-depth research and proper techniques while honoring historic design and craftsmanship.
Since 1986, History Colorado has recognized the State’s first Preservation Officer, Stephen H. Hart. Mr. Hart was a trailblazer in the field of law and how it could influence preservation in Colorado. Without Stephen Hart’s dedication to Colorado’s history, many sites would not be here today. Each project is a continued celebration of the work that Stephen Hart accomplished.
2021 Community Hart Awards
This is the first annual Stephen H. Hart Community Awards (Community Hart Awards). Each year, History Colorado’s State Historical Fund (SHF) recognizes five projects that have a significant impact in preservation across Colorado. We celebrate these projects at History Colorado Center during Colorado Preservation, Inc.’s Saving Places Conference each year. This year, SHF has decided to bring the celebration to the communities of the respected projects!
Each event will look a little different. We are working with our communities to bring together a meaningful event that everyone attending can find enjoyable and be a learning experience. Each event will have a ceremony recognizing the importance of the site and contribution to historic preservation or archaeology and a hands-on learning experience directed towards better understanding the significance of the site.
We hope that no matter your age or interest level that everyone can come to the event and celebrate projects that make our great state of Colorado the place we call home.
