Field Trips at the Ute Indian Museum

Through our engaging and interactive educational programs, students of all ages can come away with a meaningful experience that connects them to the history and living culture of the Ute people.

For the 2023/24 school year, Ute Indian Museum will be scheduling field trips for October 1st through May 10th.  Space is limited for field trips in April and May, 2024 and booking will be completed on a case by case basis.

Through our engaging and interactive educational programs, students of all ages can come away with a meaningful experience that connects them to the history and living culture of the Ute people.

Ute Indian Museum offers four different school tours, each of which features multiple hands-on activities, and can be tailored to the specific needs of your students. Students benefit from interactive experiences to learn about the living culture of the Ute people and their history in Colorado.

All of our school programs align with Colorado Academic Standards; if you want a list of the standards please ask! We also provide the following activities/tours to continue your learning experience beyond the Exhibits.

Price varies depending on the selected tour. One adult chaperone receives free admission per 10 students on all our tours. Additional adults are $3 each. Title I schools qualify for admissions and transportation discounts, including the History Colorado Bus Fund. Learn more about the Bus Fund here.

Look, Listen, Do: This scavenger hunt is designed to introduce students to Native American history in an exciting and fun way. The program includes a scavenger hunt in our museum and an engaging game of Native American Animal Sign Language BINGO or Unshaca (Native American Stick game) originally done with Buffalo ribs. (complete with prizes).
1 1/2 hours per 48 kids, grades pre-K-6, $5 per student

Museum Scavenger hunt: A guided museum scavenger hunt through the museum sharing the heritage of the Nuuche (Ute) people and their continuing legacy. 
1 hour per 24 kids,  K-8th, $3 per student

Museum Tour:  A guided museum Tour  through the museum sharing the heritage of the Nuuche (Ute) people and their continuing legacy.
1 1/2 hours per 24 kids, High school - College, $5 per student

Nuuche (Ute) Arts & Culture: Students will make a colorful beaded bracelet using a beading loom and learn what materials were used by the Nuuche (Ute) people before glass beads. The program includes a scavenger hunt through the museum that explores the history and culture of the Nuuche (Ute) people.
2 hours per 48 kids, grade 4-12, $9 per student

Jr. Archaeologist - Site Exploration: In this program, students will look at the “history written on the land” through the voices of the Nuuche (Ute) people of Colorado and the interpretation of archaeologists. They will have the opportunity to analyze a mock archaeological site and learn the importance of heritage conservation. The tour includes a scavenger hunt through the museum.
1 1/2 hours per 48 kids, grades 2-8th, $5 per student

Shavano Explorer: The Shavano Valley is one of the most picturesque and important rock art sites in western Colorado. The site was significant to both Archaic and Ute peoples. Discover possible meanings behind the rock art and learn how we preserve the site for future generations. A museum tour can be added for an additional $3. Participants must dress for the weather of Shavano Valley. Bring water, a sun hat, sunscreen, and extra layers. Sturdy shoes or boots are necessary for the rough trail and steep slopes.

2 hours, College / Adults tour, $15 per guest

Are you interested in your group spending a Night at the Museum?

Join us at the Ute Indian Museum for a night of fun and learning. Students will have the opportunity to try some of our favorite programs, see a film, and explore the museum after dark. Choose to sleep in Camp Colorado or in one of our tipis. Create a lasting memory for your students!

This program is for 3rd grade through 8th grade students. All overnights are 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. $35 per student. One free teacher or chaperone per 10 students, with $35 per each additional adult. Limited spots are available.
