As early Denver expanded outward, newly reached areas were ripe for development. Recently arrived Robert Speer worked real estate in the area, learning the skills he’d later use as mayor. From these auspicious beginnings, this “little place of the cottonwoods” would become an amusement park—with volcanoes and diving elk—surrounded by a neighborhood. That neighborhood grew along with the city, becoming a jewel in our urban crown, just as Speer intended. From its central sylvan glade outward, Alamo Placita has a river’s worth of history to share, and who wouldn’t want to ride a bike down that river! Climb on for the ride!
