A retired chief of police with the Pueblo Police Department as well as an artist, Ruben Archuleta is the author of several books on Hispano culture—including two about the Penitentes: Land of the Penitentes, Land of Tradition and Penitente Renaissance: Manifesting Hope. He based his books on his family's own Penitente journals, interviews with Penitentes, and personal experiences. The Penitentes are a secretive society and the numbers in the Brotherhood have dwindled in the last few decades. Despite these obstacles, Archuleta managed to collect interviews some would have thought impossible.
