This project will intensively survey six properties that were identified during a 2012 reconnaissance survey of properties related to the Pleasant Hill (Towner) Bus Tragedy in Kiowa and Prowers County.

The Pleasant Hill (Towner, as it is locally known) Bus Tragedy took the lives of five students and the driver of a school bus during a blizzard in March 1931. The subsequent national attention the tragedy received led to school bus safety reforms that are still in place. In 2012, under a CLG grant to the Kiowa County Historic Preservation Commission, Front Range Research Associates identified 20 properties, sites or places in Kiowa and Prowers Counties Colorado and Hamilton County Kansas, related to the ordeal. History Colorado staff believe that six of these properties warrant additional intensive survey and potential future State or National Register nominations.
