Astor House Hotel/Lake House/Castle Rock House

Jefferson County

For nearly a century from 1867 to 1971, the National Register-listed Astor House in Golden was a boarding and rooming house that served legislators, miners and students in the area, but in 1973, it was threatened with demolition, but saved from its fate as a parking lot when it was saved and transformed into a museum.

A two-story white building. There is a balcony above the front entrance with columns that reach down to ground level.

But a hundred years of use have left the foundation unstable.  Funding from the History Colorado State Historical Fund will stabilize and rehabilitate two basement foundations, provide structural support for the upper floors, and correct drainage problems in the courtyard in order to prevent future decay.  This project will enhance the building’s capacity for educational opportunities without sacrificing its historic charm.  Preservation of this Golden landmark will allow in perpetuity an opportunity to tell the story of how boarding houses served citizens historically, on a national and local basis, as well as how Golden has been supporting mountain-traveling Coloradans for more than a century.

This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
