AT&SF Railway Passenger Depot
Prowers County
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was Lamar’s link to the outside world and construction of the AT&SF Passenger Depot in 1907 was a symbol of the town’s economic success and stature as a regional hub.
The AT&SF Passenger Depot was the first and only depot in Lamar devoted solely to passenger services and an excellent example of a specific type of passenger depots built by the AT&SF in the early 1900s. The AT&SF employed standardized designs for its depots, and the Lamar depot, with its low-pitched hip roof, wide overhanging eaves, and red brick walls with contrasting stone details designed to emphasizes the building’s horizontal lines, exemplifies the Prairie School influenced design utilized by the railroad after 1900.
