Bayou Gulch Site

Douglas County

In 1977, while surveying the northern edge of the Palmer Divide in Douglas County, staff from the Colorado Department of Transportation uncovered relics in the Bayou Gulch Site dating from 7,500 to 150 years old; it was one of Colorado’s most remarkable archaeological finds!

The discovery led to extensive excavations in 1979 that eventually produced 100,000 artifacts including projectile points, tools, ceramic sherds, and earth ovens.  Although the artifacts were excavated more than three decades ago, the collection has been only minimally examined and reported, so Douglas County will use funding from the State Historical Fund to produce a comprehensive report of the artifacts and nominate the important archaeological site to the National Register of Historic Places.
