Bond Metz Farms, Inc.

Rio Grande County

Purchased by newlyweds Raymond and Mable Metz in 1917, the early Metz farm established itself as an innovator in the local potato industry. In addition to raising sheep, and farming barley and alfalfa, Ray Metz built and operated the first refrigerated potato storage facility in the San Luis Valley. The farming operation would continue to expand under the guidance of their son Kenneth and his wife Virginia.

In 1972, Kenneth and Virginia’s oldest son Bill and his wife Peggy purchased a quarter of the land with assistance from his uncle Jack Bond, establishing Bond Metz Farms in addition to the Metz Potato Company.

Despite a devastating fire in 1986 that destroyed the warehouse, farming equipment, and a portion of the potato crop, Bond Metz Farms has continued to thrive and has expanded to produce 240 acres of potatoes and 240 acres of barley each year.  Metz Potato Company, now managed by Bill and Peggy’s son, Greg, processes and packages 750,000 cwt (hundredweight) of potatoes annually.
