Buckeye School - Buckeye Community Building

Larimer County

In 1925, local landowner C.V. Owens donated three acres in Buckeye to School District No. 55 to construct a school for first through eighth grades. At the time, the school was considered very large, containing two classrooms on the main level and a living quarters for the teacher in the basement of the building.

The school closed after 1960 and was left unused until the Buckeye Community Club purchased the property in 1970. In 2008, the school achieved designation in the National Register of Historic Places and the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties because it is the last original prairie schoolhouse in the school district that remains where it was originally built.

This HC-SHF grant will provide the necessary funds to rehabilitate the south entryway stairs of the building, which are currently unsafe for use, and an electrical upgrade to ensure the safety of the building. After this work is completed the school can continue its service as a community gathering space, host of quilt and tractor shows, and remain as a symbol of the importance of education in Colorado.
