Buckhorn Exchange

Denver County

The Buckhorn Exchange is one of the oldest and best-known of Denver’s historic restaurants and bars.  Built in late 1885 or early 1886, John M. Berkey first owned the facility.  The Neef Brothers Brewery and Investment Company took title to the property in 1889.

The brewery operated the building as a saloon, the Rio Grande Exchange, beginning in November 1892 under the management of Henry H. Zeitz.  The saloon assumed the Buckhorn Exchange name in the early 1900s, and in 1932 Zeitz bought the building.  The back bar, built in Essen, Germany, and the hundreds of mounted animals bagged by Zeitz and his son, dominate the interior.
