Catherine Mullen Memorial Nurses Home / Mullen Building

Denver County

Designed by Temple Buell in 1933, the Catherine Mullen Memorial Nurses Home, otherwise known as the Mullen Building, was a state-of-the-art residence and nursing school for the nurses of Saint Joseph Hospital (SJH).

Catherine Mullen maintained close ties to the Sisters of Charity Leavenworth (the founders of SJH) and Saint Joseph Hospital until her death in 1925.  Today the building houses the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for SJH.  The Mullen Building has received one other SHF grant, which funded the restoration of 76 original windows.  With the current grant, SJH will restore the remaining 78 original windows of the Mullen Building.

Mullen Building

Before Temple Buell designed this magnificent building at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, he was a patient there after he developed tuberculosis from mustard gas poisoning during World War I. The story of the man behind the architecture shows us that the building represents so much more than just great brickwork. Find the human story behind your building, and you’ll captivate your readers.
