City Park Esplanade/Dolphin Fountain/Thatcher Fountain/Dennis Sullivan Memorial Gateway

Denver County

Although the idea for Denver’s City Park Esplanade, which included the Dennis Sullivan Memorial Gateway, was conceived in 1906, it was not until eleven years later in 1917 that this plan came to fruition.

With its ties to Mayor Robert Speer’s City Beautiful movement in the early 1900s, the Esplanade serves as the grand entrance from Colfax into City Park and features Classical Revival design with Doric columns, water features, and sculptures on a grand scale. But its deterioration led Sullivan Gateway to be included on the 2010 Colorado Most Endangered Places list.  With their commitment to preserving Denver’s legacy by providing beautiful places for people to enjoy, the City and County of Denver’s Department of Parks and Recreation will use funding from the State Historical Fund to restore the terra cotta walls and two lion’s head fountains using historic photos and molds from original pieces.
