Morgan County

In the early 1900's, the Peterson family moved to Morgan County from Morocco, Indiana. Christian Peterson purchased 240 acres along Beaver Creek, in 1907. In 1914, two of his sons homesteaded adjoining half-sections, just west of the original purchase on Beaver Creek. Max Peterson married Cora Clark in 1913 and began running the ranch. During the late 1940's and into the 1960's, Max and Cora owned several Thoroughbred horses they raced throughout the region.  Max and Cora's daughter, Juanita, and her husband Melvin Marwitz, took over ownership of the ranch from Max and Cora in 1956, and continued to farm, ranch and raise Thoroughbred horses. Their daughter, Bonnie, and her husband Howard Curtis, purchased the ranch, south of Brush, in 2009. Bonnie and Howard continued raising cattle. In 2018 the ranch was sold to 3 of their 4 children. Currently the 5th generation is operating the ranch, with the 6th generation poised to take the reins in the near future.
