Evans Memorial Chapel

Denver County

The Evans Memorial Chapel is significant for its association with John Evans, who was the first territorial governor of Colorado and founder of the Colorado Seminary (now the University of Denver).  Evans built the chapel as a memorial to his daughter Josephine Evans Elbert in 1878.

An example of early Gothic Revival architecture, the chapel served as part of the Grace Community Methodist Church from 1889 to 1953.  In 1959, it was moved from its original location at 13th and Bannock to its present location on the University of Denver campus.
