Gergen Farms, LLC

Kit Carson County

Traveling from Kansas in a covered wagon, Charles Gergen arrived at his homestead site in March 1907. After marrying Nellie Shannon in October 1911, Charles gained full ownership to his land in April 1913. Of Nellie and Charles’ five children, their youngest son, Paul Gergen, stayed on the farm, buying it from his father in 1947 for his new bride Rosemary. After many years of dryland farming the Gergens were some of the first farmers in the area to install irrigation for their corn crops. Eventually, Paul and Rosemary expanded the operation to include cattle and had a large feedlot in the 1970s. Rosemary, always one to take risks, planted sugar beets and was an early adopter of other crops such as soy beans, sunflowers and beans.  Other crops historically raised at the farm included wheat, milo, alfafa, safflower, and pickling cucumbersPaulette, their oldest daughter, built a house with her husband Norbert Ohnmacht next door, where they raised three daughters.  Today, wheat, millet, rye and many varieties of corn and beans are raised on the farm by Ryan Neiber and Tyson King of Hardway Farms, LLC.  Paulette and Norbert continue to own and reside on the land and their own grandchildren love to visit.
