Hannah Barker House

Boulder County

In the early 1860s, Hannah Barker arrived in Boulder and made a name for herself as a teacher, businesswoman, civic leader, and philanthropist.  In 1877 she and her husband bought an elaborate Italianate mansion that is today one of Boulder’s oldest buildings.

Years later, the house was converted into apartments and then boarded up and left vacant for more than two decades.  In 2010 Historic Boulder, Inc. purchased the property, and this year, the organization will use SHF funding to continue rehabilitation through interior stabilization, roof repair, and reconstruction of the building’s historic cupola—all to honor both the impressive house and its pioneering early resident.
