St. Joseph’s Church and Cemetery

Conejos County

The Capulin area was settled in the 1860s by early pobladores (settlers) that came to the San Luis Valley from Northern New Mexico, and an initial Catholic church was built in 1878.

St. Joseph’s Church and Cemetery

Members of the church led the movement to build the present church in 1912-13 and skilled Hispano craftsmen from Colorado and New Mexico cut and laid the stone for the walls and tower. The sandstone church is a well preserved example of an early-twentieth century Gothic Revival-style Catholic church with highly artistic interior ornament, including historic stained-glass windows in the original church and chapel and an elaborate altar imported from Italy in 1924. Later chapel, rectory, and convent additions were completed between 1913 and ca. 1940s. The property also encompasses a ca. 1878 cemetery to the south, originally associated with the earlier church. St. Joseph’s Church is also significant for its association with its overwhelmingly Hispano parish and as a focus for community events.
