Wailes Farm

Arapahoe County

Raman and Jennie Miller purchased this farm from the Strasburg Lincoln Land Company in 1918, where they raised small grains and hogs and built a home. Raman operated the farm while also serving as an Arapahoe County Commissioner and on the State Board of Agriculture; in the 1940s Raman was instrumental in bringing rural electrification to the area. Upon their deaths, Raman and Jennie’s daughter Ruth and her husband Frank Vannoy took over the farm where they continued to raise small grains. They were eventually joined by their daughter Diane and her husband Donald Wailes in 1973. Frank and his son-in-law Donald added hogs back into the operation along with small grains until in the late 1990s/early 2000s the land was enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program and planted to grass. When Frank passed away in 2008, farm operations were continued by Don Wailes and his son, Don Wailes II. Don II, his wife Faith, and their two children now reside in the original home. Don and Don II raise cattle in addition to hobby farm animals including hogs, potbellied pigs, miniature donkeys, and chickens. The Wailes farm is now part of a larger farm corporation, Wailes Farms, Inc. that farms land in Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas.
