San Luis Mural

Sierra y Colores, Carlos Sandoval, 1986, San Luis, Colorado. This mural references Colorado Chicano communities' connection to their New Mexican, Spanish, Mexican, and Indigenous ancestry, publicly linking the self, family, and community to a broader historical narrative. The woman in the center holds a basket representing the fertile communal lands of the San Luis valley that has nourished Indigenous communities for thousands of years and later the Hispano settlers that founded San Luis, the first town in Colorado.
