Begins 2015 with a Brisk Schedule of Programs and Events

DENVER, Dec. 15 – History Colorado reaches broad and diverse audiences with educational exhibits and programs, award-winning publications and access to historic collections and serves as an invaluable research facility for historians and researchers throughout the country.  Civic engagement is at the heart of History Colorado’s statewide mission and is accomplished through a variety of public programs and partnerships, educational outreach and online resources that enrich Colorado classrooms throughout the state.  Over the holidays and into 2015, History Colorado will hold a brisk schedule of film screenings, lectures, free days and events.

December 20-January 4 -- SCHOOL MAY BE OUT, BUT HISTORY COLORADO IS OPEN

Free admission for middle and high school students to see RACE: Are We So Different?

Kids often get restless while on winter break. Parents often find themselves at wits end trying to keep them entertained.   Want to provide an outlet for teenagers to experience History Colorado’s acclaimed traveling exhibit, Race: Are We So Different? It is timely and provides a way to give recent events in Ferguson and New York important much-needed context.

The History Colorado Center is offering free admission to middle and high school students to come and see RACE: Are We So Different? during winter break. Starting Saturday, December 20 through Sunday, January 4, middle and high school students who present a valid student ID will receive free admission to museum.

December 15-January 4 – LAST CHANCE TO SEE RACE: ARE WE SO DIFFERENT? History Colorado has been featuring the acclaimed traveling exhibit RACE: Are We So Different? to begin helping Coloradans of all ages to explore the science, history and everyday impact of race.  The exhibition has been running since September 20 and will close after January 4.  This amazing exhibit is a must-see experience that is vitally important to our community and our country, because it fosters a deeper understanding of the issues and history of race and racism. It has provided a stimulus for the larger conversation. There is still time to see RACE: Are We So Different?  For more information, go to  http://historycoloradocenter.org/exhibits/race/

January 3 – Low Sensory Mornings:  History Colorado Center invites families and individuals experiencing sensory disorders, including Autism, to enjoy our museum at no cost.  During these special hours, we close the museum to the public, turn our lights down a bit, turn the volume down on videos and games, and limit the capacity to only those families who have registered in advance.  These few hours allow families to interact with our exhibits and one another in a way that often isn’t possible during our regular hours.  Kids have the freedom to explore our museum at their own pace, and parents have the security of knowing that every person here respects the uniqueness of their child.

If you or someone you know has a child living with autism or other special needs, please consider reserving at spot at our Low Sensory Morning from 8-10 am.  It’s as easy as an email to Shannon, at Shannon.voirol@state.co.us, or call her at 303/866-4691.

January 7 – Storytime: Learning to read begins BEFORE a child starts school — as a matter of fact, it begins at birth. That’s why History Colorado provides education programs that include story telling time and early hours on certain weekends for low-sensory children.  The next Story Time event is Wednesday, January 7, 2015 from 9:30am – 10:00am. Reservations are not required The cost for kids 5 and younger:  FREE; for Adults: $10.  See more at: http://www.historycolorado.org/events/story-time-history-colorado-center-9#sthash.3UJXGIcd.dpuf

January 8 – Comingle:  After-hours history “happenings” with an offbeat mix of games, trivia, talks, performances and hands-on activities. Toss in a cash bar, munchies and a whole lot of Colorado spirit and you’ve got the recipe for a wonderful  evening of networking for young professionals.  From 6-9 pm at the History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway, Denver.  Tickets are $10 for adults.  Tickets can be purchased at the door or online.
