History Colorado and the 1968 Exhibit

WHAT

The Huey is a symbol of that wrenching conflict of the Vietnam War and is literally staged in a living room at History Colorado.  It is a full-size, Vietnam era Huey helicopter.  One of its massive rotors looms overhead like a chandelier.  It will be assembled by a team of veterans later and then be put on display in the exhibit

WHEN

Thursday, January 22 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the museum’s 4th floor exhibit gallery

WHERE

History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203

INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY

The exhibit organizer and military veteran volunteers are available for on-site and pre-event interviews.  Our veterans served in Vietnam and are all from Denver.  Some were helicopter pilots, others served in the different branches of the military.  Their stories are remarkable.

ABOUT THE 1968 EXHIBIT

History Colorado will host “The 1968 Exhibit" beginning February 7, 2015. The social forces that swirled through the turbulent 1960s crested in 1968, a year that shaped the rest of the 20th century. "The 1968 Exhibit" will bring to life this pivotal American year through photographs, artifacts, vintage pop culture items and interactives organized in 7,000 square feet of exhibit space in the History Colorado Center.

Vietnam-era artifacts, such as this full-size Huey helicopter, a draft notice, helmets and other gear will be on display, as well as a program from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral service, and a camera used to photograph Robert F. Kennedy the night he was shot.

See pop culture artifacts, such as the iconic purple jacket work by guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, Mr. Rogers' sweater, vintage record albums and more.

Three interactive lounges focus on the music, design, movies and television that shaped a generation. While in the exhibit, visitors will be able to cast a vote in the '68 presidential election, listen to music by '60s rock icons, and challenge friends to a 1960s trivia quiz.

The exhibit kicks off with a 1968 premiere party on February 5th at the History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway in Denver.  Tickets for the event cost $100 per person and museum members can attend the event for $90 per person.  Tickets can be purchased at http://historycoloradocenter.org/exhibits/the-1968-exhibit/premiere-party/.  Guests will have first access to the exhibit, as well as entertainment, groovy music, cuisine and cocktails in a setting reminiscent of 1968.  There’s nowhere else in the state where guests can explore this incredible year, reflect on their own fond memories, and see the events that changed Colorado and America forever.
