Senator Larry Crowder to present a check to the Homelake Historic Preservation and Restoration Foundation

DENVER -  Senator Larry Crowder will present an oversized check in the amount of $164,412, to Homelake Historic Preservation and Restoration Foundation for their recent History Colorado State Historical Fund grant for the exterior rehabilitation of the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake. The special event will take place at 11am at on Monday October 5th, at the Center’s Old Administration Building. Along with the check presentation, attendees are invited to tour the facilities to see the early stages of progress.

Funding from the History Colorado State Historical Fund will rehabilitate the exterior of the building. Once completed, the foundation will partner with the San Luis Valley Museum Association and Monte Art Council to transform the building into the Homelake Interpretive History and Conference Center. The center will educate the public on Colorado military history, highlight the value of historic preservation, bring tourism to the San Luis Valley, and offer the community a space for special events.

Established in 1889 by the Colorado State Legislature, the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake first provided refuge and treatment for aging and disabled Civil War veterans and has continued to serve veterans of most 20th-century American wars and conflicts. After vacancy and neglect threatened many on-site buildings with demolition, the property was placed on the 2005 Colorado’s Most Endangered Places list. Since then, theHomelake Historic Preservation and Restoration Foundation has worked hard to transform the campus.

The History Colorado State Historical Fund awards grants across the state to sites important to preserving state history. Through the SHF Grant Celebration, the State Historical Fund brings attention to landmarks that define Colorado’s past and enrich Colorado’s future.

If you are interested in attending the event, the address is as follows:
