History Colorado awards $138,505 in grants to assist local governments

DENVER –  The History Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation has awarded funding to 13 local governments totaling $138,505  to aid in their historic preservation efforts. These counties and municipalities are among the 52 local Colorado governments whose historic preservation programs have been certified by the National Park Service through History Colorado for meeting national preservation standards.

Local governments that received funding this year:

  • City of Boulder, $3,642, for educational training.
  • City of Cortez, $13,602, for the survey of the South Side of Main Street.
  • >City and County of Denver, $8,000, to host the Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program training at the next Saving Places Conference.
  • City of Elizabeth, $20,949, for an historic context study of the city.
  • Town of Erie, $20,000, to create a master historic preservation plan.
  • Gilpin County, $23,500, for historic preservation survey of Russell Gulch.
  • City of Greeley, $5,838, for educational training.
  • Town of Lake City, $1,000, to create marketing materials for their historic resources.
  • City of Lakewood, $4,500, for local landmark designation of the O’Kane House.
  • City of Leadville, $18,500, for historic survey of Harrison Avenue.
  • Town of Louisville, $4,576, for educational training.
  • Otero County, $3,271, to create marketing materials for their historic resources and Section 106 training.
  • Park County, $10,000, for historic preservation survey of the Fairplay Town Center.
  • City of Steamboat Springs, $1,127, for educational training.

“The Certified Local Government program seeks to encourage and expand local involvement in historic preservation activities,” said Mark Rodman, History Colorado preservation technical services manager, “communities within the program place a strong local policy emphasis on historic preservation.”

History Colorado through the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation administers the U.S. Department of Interior's Historic Preservation Fund Program in cooperation with the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service.

The application deadline for the next grant round is November 1, 2016.
