Students work with Colorado General Assembly to honor historic places
DENVER – On February 26, History Colorado, the Colorado Preserve America Youth Summit and the Discover Colorado program students from the Adams 12 School District joined the Colorado General Assembly on the floor to hear the reading of Senate Joint Resolution 16-010 Concerning the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act.
One of the few student-written resolutions to have come to the Senate and House floor, this resolution showcases the active role youth play in historic preservation. For several months these students worked with History Colorado, Senator Ellen Roberts, Senator Pat Steadman, Representative Daneya Esgar and Representative Jim Wilson to craft a resolution that honored the history of Colorado.
“We were there to honor the fact that Colorado has always been about preserving our communities and the unique sense of place we all enjoy in this beautiful state,” said Representative Jim Wilson, “We pass bills and allocate resources that help preserve and maintain these historic places, but this is also about educating the next generation on the importance of our historic resources. History is what we stand on if we ever allow that to erode and disappear I think our civilization will as well. ”
50 years ago American’s worked with their Federal legislators in partnership with state and local governments to pass a Federal Act to help protect cultural and historic resources. Colorado has gone beyond just the Federal Act to insure that Colorado’s future continues to honor its past.
“So many Coloradans have worked hard over the last 50 years to hold up our history, and we should take the time to honor historic preservation every day, said Senator Pat Steadman, “Look around your communities and recognize the important work that has been done but know that we still have a part to play in preserving our heritage."
