The History Colorado Center and Center for Colorado Women’s History in Denver, El Pueblo History Museum, Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center, and Trinidad History Museum celebrated the honorary 146 birthday of the beautiful Centennial State on August 1, 2022. The occasion was marked by offering free admission and historic festivities, including live music, animals, arts and crafts, gold panning, face painting, chalk artists, Denver sports mascots and more.

State Historical Fund Fall 2022 Competitive Grant Round Opens

The 2022 fall grant round opened August 1, 2022 for both mini and general grant requests. The State Historical Fund (SHF) is the granting program of History Colorado that awards grants to projects that strive to preserve places that are eligible or designated at the local, state or national level. Businesses or individuals with a preservation project should visit historycolorado.org/state-historical-fund or contact the SHF staff to see if you are eligible to apply. 

Lincoln Hills Celebration and Community Hart Award 
History Colorado Center | August 11, 4:00- 6:30 p.m. 
History Colorado is hosting a preservation workshop to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln Hills. The workshop will offer participants the opportunity to learn about the impact preservation can have on a site and incentives available to individuals or businesses interested in a historical preservation project. The Community Hart Award will take place at the end of the workshop to recognize the research completed for the African American Travel and Recreation Resource Survey. Tickets are free of cost.

Bold Women. Change History. Speaker Joy Harjo 
History Colorado Center | August 10, 7:00-8:00 p.m. 
The Bold Women. Change History. Speaker Series is back! The new series is kicking off with a powerful presentation by United States Poet Laureate, author and performer, Joy Harjo (Muscogee). Harjo is the first Native American to hold the position of U.S. Poet Laureate and only the second poet laureate to serve three terms. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she is a renowned international performer and writer of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. She is the author of nine books of poetry, several plays, children’s books and two memoirs. Attendees will hear empowering stories and poems from Harjo that draw from her life experiences. A City Imagined: A Historic Evening with Denver Mayors
History Colorado Center | August 18, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
To celebrate the final month of the Building Denver exhibition which closes September 6th, History Colorado Center is hosting an evening with some of Denver’s most notable mayors. Former Mayors Federico Peña and Wellington Webb, Senator John Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael Hancock will come together to reflect on Denver's past four decades and how their work has shaped our capital city.  The conversation will be facilitated by Laura E. New State Historian Announcement 
Dr. Jared Orsi became Colorado’s new State Historian on August 1, 2022. Dr. Orsi is a professor of history at Colorado State University and the Director of the Public Lands History Center. Specializing in environmental and borderlands history, he teaches courses on U.S. and Mexican history, and his recent book, Citizen Explorer: The Life of Zebulon Pike, was a finalist for the Colorado Book Award for history. He has been a member of the State Historian’s Council since 2018.
