The SHF competitive grants provide funding for historic preservation projects in the areas of Acquisition & Development, Survey & Planning, Education, and Archaeology. Grant application deadlines are typically every April 1 and October 1. There are two levels of funding: mini-grants provide support of up to $35,000 and big grants are for projects requesting from $35,001 up to $200,000.

October 1, 2018, 11:59 p.m. — All competitive applications due. No exceptions.
December 1, 2018 — Award announcement for competitive grants for $35,000 or less
February 1, 2019 — Award announcement for competitive grants $35,001 to $200,000
Acquisition and development projects involve stabilization, preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, reconstruction, or the acquisition of a property or site. The program offers funding up to $200,000 per applicant per grant cycle.
Archaeology grants encompass all archaeological projects—from archaeology site identification to site management and interpretation. The program offers funding up to $200,000 per project per grant cycle.
Education grants fund eligible projects that concern historic preservation such as videos, interpretive signage, brochures, books, websites, walking tours, conferences, field schools, curriculum planning and development, and other programs.
