Historian speaking to family at Colorado Day 2017

Story

5 things for families to do at the History Colorado Center this summer

There’s nothing like summer in Colorado. Between camping trips, baseball games, and picnics in the park, we know there’s no lack of things to do. We’ve got lots of exciting plans for inspiring wonder at History Colorado Center this summer and we don’t want you to miss out! Be sure to pen these into your calendar so you can have some fun with us before the season is through.

1. LEGOrado exhibit and workshops

From May 26 to Sept 3, our LEGOrado exhibit at History Colorado Center will feature a giant LEGO® re-creation of Colorado history. You can join in the adventure by building your own creations too! We’re even offering workshops - visitors can build and keep their own Colorado-style LEGO set before going on a special guided tour. Exhibit is free with admission.

2. Play Ball! & Kids Free Summer

Planning on catching a Rockies game at Coors Field? Make a day of it by visiting our Play Ball! A Celebration of America's Game on view at History Colorado Center through the 2018 baseball season. Size up your hand against Babe Ruth’s, admire the glove flashed by Willie Mays, and see the uniform worn by Joe DiMaggio in his final World Series. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see one of the greatest sets of baseball artifacts ever assembled outside the Hall of Fame. To make it a real homerun, we’re offering free admission to kids 15 and under when they wear a baseball jersey (two free child/youth admissions per paying adult/senior) from Memorial Day to Labor Day!

3. Colorado Day

On August 1st, 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant made Colorado the “Centennial State.”  Every year we celebrate our incredible state by offering free admission to all of our eight museums across the state. We host live performances, demonstrations, and celebratory activities all day long - we even have birthday cake!

4. Bikes and Big Wheels

Join us at History Colorado Center on Saturday, July 21 for Bikes and Big Wheels, where families can speed through our Big Wheel racetrack and saddle up for a Bicycle Rodeo to learn the skills to ride a bike safely! Vintage bikes, video games, and scavenger hunts will highlight the history and evolution of bicycle travel. Visitors are encouraged to bike to our downtown location, and children 17 and under will get free admission by showing their bike helmet at the front desk.

5. Hands on History Family Fun Days

The second Saturday of every month we offer special hands-on, immersive activities so families can create their own history. Join us for adobe brick making, log cabin building, live performances, role playing, and more. On June 9 activities will be baseball-themed.

These top recommendations are not an exhaustive list. As always, we’ll also have awesome exhibits, inspiring lectures, memorable tours and treks, and more fun events. This summer we’ll also host an interactive Postcard Colorado installation and a gorgeous indoor mural created by local artist Anthony Garcia. And if your family prefers a low-sensory environment, join us for free the morning of June 16.

If you plan to travel Colorado this summer, be sure to check out our Community Museums across the state, many of which have summer programs too.

See you soon!
