Denver A to Z celebrates the Mile High City’s past and present, letter by letter
New History Colorado Center exhibit opens Nov. 17

DENVER — Discover the heart, the art, the whimsy and the energy of Denver’s people, places and spirit in “Denver A to Z: Adrenaline to Zombies and (almost) Everything In Between,” a new lighthearted and interactive exhibit opening on Saturday, Nov. 17 in the Honnen Family Gallery at the History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway, Denver. And, the public has an opportunity to explore the city by participating in History Colorado’s “Discover Denver A to Z” Mobile Scavenger Hunt, taking place Nov. 10-18, which includes a chance to win $1,000!
Opening Nov. 17, 2012 (no closing date) — “Denver A to Z: Adrenaline to Zombies and (almost) Everything In Between”:
“Denver A to Z” is the newest addition to the History Colorado Center’s core exhibition program. Denverites know that the Mile High City is like no other on earth, and “Denver A to Z” taps into the essence of Colorado’s capital city letter by letter—“A is for Adrenaline,” with a look at Denver’s thrilling theme parks; “Z is for Zombies,” referencing Cheesman Park’s deathly past—and every letter in between.
This family-friendly, 1,500-square-foot exhibit features fun, hands-on interactives, such as digital “cage matches” between Denver icons, including Mary Elitch, Molly Brown, John Elway, Tom Shane and more (“K is for Knockout”). A sculpture of Denver’s famous “Barrel Man,” Tim McKernan, pays homage to Denver’s sporting spirit (“D is for Devoted”). An eight-foot-tall version of “I See What You Mean,” artist Lawrence Argent’s forty-foot-tall bear that peers into the Denver Convention Center, celebrates Denver’s robust creative community (“B is for Blue Bear”). A wall of beer bottles from local breweries honors this growing Denver tradition, past and present (“M is for Microbrews”).
Visitors of all ages will discover plenty of rich and surprising Denver history, with nods to metro-Denver landmarks such as Red Rocks, the Brown Palace, the D&F Tower, Casa Bonita, St. Cajetan Catholic Church, the Fillmore Auditorium and more.
“We love this city, and this exhibit is a celebration of Denver’s unique people, places, events and character,” said Bill Convery, state historian and director of exhibits and interpretation at History Colorado. “No institution is better situated to engage visitors about Denver’s past, present and future.”
“Denver A to Z” is included in the cost of a general admission ticket ($10 adult, $8 seniors/students, $5 children 6 to 12), which can be purchased online or onsite. Could you win $1,000 by participating in History Colorado’s “Discover Denver A to Z” Mobile Scavenger Hunt taking place November 10-18? The only way to find out is to try! This family-friendly hunt leads teams to different clues throughout the city. Complete challenges to earn points and qualify to be entered into a drawing to win the grand prize. - “A” is for Act fast! Grab your loved ones—spouse, partner, kids, best friend or favorite cousin and register your team to play. Your team can include up to four adults and an unlimited (but manageable!) number of kids under the age of 18 (all minors must have parental consent to participate). - “D” is for Download! Download the SCVNGR app on your smartphone to access challenges (iPhone or Android only; see “Alternate Method of Entry” if you don’t have one of these). We will email all Team Captains three days before the game starting time with instructions for the hunt.
- “G” is for Get ready! You and your friends and family will have one week to trek across Denver, discovering new places and seeing familiar sites in a very different way!
- “W” is for Win big! The winning team will receive a Grand Prize of $1,000! The runner-up team will receive $500. Winners will be notified after November 30 and do not need to be present to receive their prize; each team that completes the trek within the participation period that has at least 30 points – or 15 questions answered correctly – will receive up to four complimentary tickets to the “Denver A to Z” exhibit at the History Colorado Center.
