Northeast colorado
The Northeastern region of Colorado is home to stunning landscapes of endless plains, sweeping grasslands, and shallow canyons. The first peoples to live in Northeast Colorado arrived at least 13,000 years ago. Over ensuing centuries, the Arapaho, the Cheyenne, Utes, Pawnee, Kiowa, and Lakota have been among the Tribes that roamed these eastern plains.
Since the mid-19th century, this region’s history has also been deeply rooted in agriculture. Today, numerous family farms still dot the land many of the locals have called home for generations.
The Pawnee National Grasslands in this area feature vast prairies and sweeping vistas, highlighting the beauty of Colorado's eastern plains. Here, one can bird watch at the Limon Wetlands or camp at Flagler State Wildlife Area. Step into the past at the Kit Carson County Carousel, built in 1905, or the Limon Heritage and Railroad Museum. For a true celebration of this region’s vibrant Western spirit, attend the Mountain Plover Festival in Karval, or the Brush Rodeo, started in 1925.
This region is more than just beautiful plains. It’s a rich tapestry of communities that embrace and celebrate the importance of its place in the history of Colorado.

Northeastern Colorado’s commemorative efforts are being coordinated by Local Organizing Committees, made up of community members and local leaders. Led by Commission Advisory Panel members, these committees are working to engage the community through idea generation, community outreach, and local event planning for Colorado’s Sesquisemiquincentennial.
