The house is one of the few residences in the community retaining its original outbuildings, making it an important example of a late 19th century urban residential complex.
The Garcia School is one of only a few adobe buildings remaining in what was once Plaza de los Manzanares, a settlement in the San Luis Valley dating to 1849.
Fort Garland is important for its association with the settlement of the San Luis Valley and southern Colorado. Built in 1858, the fort served as a base of military operations until it was abandoned in 1883.
