This 1881 vertical shaft kiln is a variety known as a separate feed kiln.

Little Rome is the site of an historic mining camp that was occupied by Italian immigrants who worked at the Ute-Ulay Mine and Mill from 1889 to 1899.

Established in 1875 as a supply center for the heavy mining activity in the area, people found their way to Lake City via the Saguache-San Juan Toll Road built by Enos Hotchkiss, one of the town founders.

The property illustrates the extreme conditions of altitude, climate, and isolation faced by mining operations in the area. 

The complex includes a 150-ton flotation mill, the mine tunnel, several associated buildings, and the ruins of several buildings that were destroyed by the county's deadliest avalanche in 1929.

The Tobasco Mine and Mill is associated with the metal mining history of Hinsdale and San Juan counties. The complex possesses the distinctive characteristics of a moderate size 1900s gold mine and mill operation in which the organization pattern is clearly evident.

The Debs School served from 1926 until consolidation in 1951 as the only school in the remote southeast region of Hinsdale County.

Designed by architect Frederick W. Paroth, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church was built between 1899 and 1904. The Romanesque Revival church was listed as a Denver Landmark in 1977. The associated memorial and contemplative garden (1965), brick rectory (1904) and office annex (1965), parish hall (1902, remodeled 1970), and parking lot have long served the social and cultural functions of the church and annual traditional celebrations.

This simple 1889 wood frame rural schoolhouse closed due to a school consolidation in 1948, but it continues to function as a community center.  Listed under Rural School Buildings in Colorado Multiple Property Submission.
