The Unzicker Homestead, located in Phillips County near Holyoke, also celebrates its centennial this year. Daniel and Angelica Unzicker  were the first to homestead the 160 acres one hundred years ago. Although the property is now leased out for wheat production, the farm is still under the ownership of the original homesteader's daughter, Vera M. Unzicker, and grand-daughter, Ruth M. Unzicker Jackson.

The Smillie-King-Sevevin Farm near Eaton is another of our farms celebrating its centennial this year. It got its start in 1891 when Andrew Jackson Smillie purchased 160 acres from the original homesteader. A. J. Smillie and his wife Etta eventually passed the farm on to their daughter Cecile, who had married Arthur Dale King. Arthur and Cecile, in turn, passed on operations of the farm to their daughter, Hazel Marie, and her husband Dean Serverin. Today, Dean and Hazel continue to manage and live on the farm, which produces sugar beets, beans, corn, alfalfa, barley and oats.

The Rio Culebra Ranch near San Luis is one of our oldest centennial farms. It dates back to 1863 when Ignacita and Blas Olivas acquired the property within the Sangre de Cristo land grant. The ranch today encompasses over 400 acres of San Pedro bottom lands and is owned by Ida and Elmer Valdez; Ida being the great grand-daughter of the original settlers. The Rio Culebra Ranch is also being given an historic structures award for having preserved several older buildings.

The Mildred Pino Shafter Ranch, located near Walsenburg in Huerfano County, dates back to 1889 when Antonio Sotelo Pino first homesteaded 160 acres. It has since grown to over 500 acres and is now the home of Mildred Pino Shafter and her husband Ernest, who operates the ranch with his son, Joseph. The ranch celebrated its centennial two years ago by hosting a reunion of members of the Pino family. Over 400 people attended that celebration coming from far away as Alaska.

The 700 acre Peep O'Day Park, located near Loveland in Larimer County, was first homesteaded in 1878. Brothers William and Alfred Wild both farmed the land in the early years. Alfred Wild was one of Colorado's pioneers in hops production and was also involved in fruit crops and the production of apple vinegar and cider. The farm is now owned by Alfred Wild's son, Alfred, Jr. and is devoted to wheat production. The Wild family is being given the, historic structures award for preserving several historic buildings, including the original farmhouse dating to about 1880.

Ridgway's Lone Pine Ranch celebrates its centennial this year. The ranch got its start in 1891, when John Kettle purchased 160 acres of farmland in Ouray County just west of Ridgway. John's son, William R. Kettle, who was just 6 years old when his dad purchased the ranch, added to it in 1917 by homesteading an additional 400 acres of pasture at the foot of Mt. Sneffles. William's daughter, Faye, along with her husband, Davis Wolford, now own and operate the ranch.

The Laughlin Farm is located near Lafayette in Boulder County. It was first settled in 1885 when William George Laughlin moved there along with his 2 year old son, John Aken Laughlin. By 1914, John had grown up and built a new house for himself, his father and bride. In 1918, John's daughter, Lenore Hazel Laughlin, was born and has been living on the farm ever since. Lenore married Mr. Lois Walker in 1936. Several original buildings still stand on the farm, for which the Laughlin Farm will be receiving a special historic structures award.

The Hycrest Farm is located on 120 acres in Boulder County near Longmont. It was first homesteaded in 1876 by A. W. Johnson, the grandfather of the current owner. The farm has seen a number of crops over the years; the most common being corn, beans, barley, wheat, alfalfa and oats. The current owner is Helen McCarty. The Hycrest farm is being given a special historic structures award for having preserved a number of historic buildings, including the old, red brick home, which dates to 1898.

The Esty Ranch encompasses 1120 acres of pasture land just outside Gunnison. The ranch was first homesteaded in 1884 by John Burnett Outcalt, who was one of the first settlers in the Gunnison area. In 1888, John B Outcalt married Florence Johnston from Indiana. The ranch grew over the years, and was eventually passed on to the Outcalt's daughter, Vevarelle Esty. The Esty Ranch is also being given a special historic structures award for several historic buildings, some of which date back to the 1880s.

The Epple Ranch near Roggen in Weld County was started in 1890 when John George Epple purchased 160 acres and built a dugout in the side of Mule Creek for his home. Although it had grown to over 3200 acres by WWI it was split up when John G. died, with his son John H. receiving the original 160 acres. Today, the 1800 acre ranch is owned by John E. Epple, Sr. and his wife Marian, and is operated by their son William Epple and his wife Linda. The Epples will be receiving a special historic structures award for preserving several of the ranch's original buildings.
