Lanckriet Custom Farms

In 1903, 19 year old Edmond Lanckriet arrived in Julesburg in Sedgwick County by rail after immigrating from Belgium. Shortly after, his parents and six brothers joined him on the Colorado plains running open range cattle and establishing farms and homesteads. Edmond submitted papers for his own place near Julesburg in July of 1907. The brothers continued to work together and help each other out, including a joint investment purchase of a Reeves steam tractor and Nicholas-Shepard thrasher that was used until 1925.

Dolezal Farm

In 1917, Felix Lempka purchased a farm near Julesburg in Sedgwick County. Felix and his wife, Frances, raised six children on the farm. Their daughter, Margaret and son-in-law, Jerry Dolezal, purchased the farm from her parents in 1942. Jerry and Margaret retired in 1982 when their son, Jim, and wife Charlene, moved to the farm. The couple purchased adjacent property in Nebraska, expanding the family farm over the years. They raised two daughters in the home that Jim’s grandfather, Felix Lempka, built in 1926.

Dracon Family Farm

Fleeing the Greek Civil war, brothers Chris and William Dracon settled in Julesburg in 1915. Chris would purchase the original farm that same year. William, his wife Sophia, and seven children would settle on the land in the 1920s. William and Sophia’s son George purchased the land from his uncle Chris in 1962.  Since then, George and his wife Delores have managed the Dracon Grain Company which provides livestock grains and feed, in addition to grain storage and sales to the surrounding farming community.

Union Pacific Railroad Julesburg Depot (Depot Museum)

The 1930 Union Pacific Railroad depot in Julesburg played a critical role in the development and growth of Julesburg and of northeastern Colorado.  Rail service moved passengers, agricultural crops, cattle and locally manufactured items to points east and west of Julesburg.  The Denver branch allowed local citizens to travel to and from the city and area merchants to get their goods to market.

Sedgwick County Courthouse

Constructed by the Works Progress Administration between 1938 and 1939, the courthouse represents federal New Deal relief programs at work in eastern Colorado during the Great Depression.  The county commissioners took advantage of the WPA program to match county funds toward the construction of a new courthouse to replace a 1904 facility.  The building is an excellent example of the WPA Art Deco style applied to a government building whose construction was constrained by the economic conditions of the Depression.

Hippodrome Theatre

The 1919 Hippodrome Theatre was Julesburg’s first theater building constructed specifically for the exhibition of motion pictures, and it continues in that use.
