John Daniel Sr., a Czechoslovakian immigrant, purchased 160 acres in Burlington in 1905 to homestead. Wheat has been the main crop through the years, and the land is currently farmed by Donald Raymond Daniel, Glenda Kay Daniel, their children, and grandchildren, who represent the 6th Daniel generation on the farm.

In 1906, Edward Elmer Beeson acquired homestead rights for property in Kit Carson County. The land was barren prairie land, so they planted trees on the property and carried water to them, even the dish and bath water. Through five generations, the family has continued to live and ranch on the property, managing a cow/calf operation and grassland and grazing for regenerative practices.

Charles Martin Shook was granted a homestead of 160 acres fifteen miles north of Flagler Colorado, in February of 1913. Charles Marion Kyle married Charles Martin Shook's granddaughter Rachel Harwood in 1926 and the couple raised seven children on the farm. Their children, Marion Alexander Kyle, June Kyle Shideler, Theresa Kyle Copley, Vada Kyle Carey, Marylin Kyle Grimes, Glenn Kyle and Meredith Kyle Hase. Charles Marion Kyle built the house where Marion Alexander Kyle was born in 1927. He lived there until his death in 2008.

Frank Michal came out on a train to eastern Colorado in 1919 with a land agent and several other men. They looked at ground near Flagler and Yuma, Colorado. Frank chose to buy some land near Flagler because it was cheaper. On January 15, 2020, Frank signed a contract to buy the east half of 29-6S-51W, Kit Carson County from Victor Lebiedzek. Frank and Ida NIchal moved with baby, Helen, and a foster son, Jack, from Pawnee City, Nebraska to Colorado in 1920.

In December 1917 Samuel Schaal Sr. put a payment down on 320 acres of land near Burlington on behalf his son Jacob. Jacob started building a sod home in 1918 and after returning from World War I, finished the home and added a well house, barn and chicken house. Jacob and his wife Emma raised their family in the soddy, growing hay, wheat and corn and running about 40 head of cattle. Emma was fatally burned in a tragic kerosene accident and Jacob never remarried.

Traveling from Kansas in a covered wagon, Charles Gergen arrived at his homestead site in March 1907. After marrying Nellie Shannon in October 1911, Charles gained full ownership to his land in April 1913. Of Nellie and Charles’ five children, their youngest son, Paul Gergen, stayed on the farm, buying it from his father in 1947 for his new bride Rosemary.After many years of dryland farming the Gergens were some of the first farmers in the area to install irrigation for their corn crops.

A.W. Winegar built this two-story brick commercial building in 1907.  Distinctive for its degree and type of detailing, the structure dominates the main commercial street comprised mainly of small and modest one and two-story brick structures.

The 1928-29 concrete slab bridge includes seven 19-foot spans.  It crosses Spring Creek on a now lightly traveled portion of US Hwy. 24 that runs parallel to I-70 between Siebert and Vona.

Since its construction in 1909, by W.L. Price and W.H. Lavington, the building has housed a variety of functions important to the community’s growth.  From 1909 to approximately 1930, the building operated as a hotel. 

The Sim Hudson Motor Company played a major role in the development of automobile sales and service in Burlington.  Beginning as the Golden Belt Garage, during Sim Hudson’s ownership of the property his dealership sold and serviced Chevrolets.  His facility also sold auto parts, dispensed gasoline through curbside pumps and stored automobiles for customers without garages.  He commissioned a new Art Deco facade that, when completed in 1932, gave the dealership a modern eye-catching appearance.
