These trail segments are part of the larger Santa Fe Trail Mountain Route that provided a vital transportation link between the United States and the newly independent Mexico fostering not only commercial trade, but also establishing social ties that were pivotal to regional development and expansion of the United States from 1832-1879.

The Smith/Friskey Ranch is associated with the history of agriculture in Chaffee County, beginning as a homestead and serving as a cattle and hay ranch from ca. 1888 through 1964.

Built ca. 1896, Pine Hall is the only remaining intact representative of false front type construction that typified Granite’s built environment in the nineteenth century, most of which were subsequently destroyed by three historic fires.

The Head Lettuce Day/Collegiate Peaks Stampede Rodeo Grounds is the site of Buena Vista’s annual rodeo, an important local and regional sporting and entertainment event and celebration recognizing the area’s ranching roots.

Cleora Cemetery, established ca. 1880, is associated with the early settlement of the southern Arkansas River Valley in Chaffee County, including the railroad war between the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad that led to the founding of both Cleora and Salida.

The Cliff Theater is significant in the area of entertainment/recreation.  Ever since its grand opening in 1950 the theater has served as Wray’s primary public entertainment venue and community event space

The Ute-Ulay Mine and Mill is a representative large-scale silver and lead mining and milling complex which was one of the most productive in the Lake City area.

The 1909 Truxaw & Kruger Grocery/Seldin’s Cash Grocery is important for housing commercial businesses that contributed to the development of New Raymer as a railroad and market town for the surrounding dryland farming and ranching district.

The Torpedo Bomber M (TBM) Avenger Aircraft N53503 is a World War II single engine torpedo bomber in flying condition.  The military aircraft was manufactured by General Motors’ Eastern Aircraft division in 1945, and accepted for service by the United States Navy’s Bureau of Ordnance later that same year. 

A cross gabled bell tower tops the roof of this wood frame rural schoolhouse.  The building’s current one-story configuration dates from 1912.
