Constructed 1923, the CB&Q Denver Shops Powerhouse is significant as an excellent example of an industrial powerhouse building from the 1920s. Character-defining features include its separate but conjoined Boiler and Engine room sections; double-monitor roof; brick walls with minimal, but thoughtful, concrete detailing and styled parapet walls; large, unfinished interior spaces; and corresponding large, steel, multi-light windows with center pivot sashes designed to provide natural light and ventilation.

First constructed in 1900 for local businessman and industrialist Harry C. James the building is an excellent example of a turn-of-the-twentieth-century Italian Renaissance style residence in Denver, Colorado. This style was comparatively rare in Denver during the 1900s through 1920s, but was nevertheless a style was that was capably rendered by professional architects and well suited to the city’s upper class residents.

The 1927 Classical Revival-style Central Junior High School, renamed Keating Junior High School in 1937, is situated in the heart of the City of Pueblo. The concept of junior high schools was introduced in the 1910s and grew in popularity in the 1920s. Adopted across the nation, the innovation aimed to keep students in school by easing the transition between grade school and high school. To meet this educational need the school was constructed in 1927 and rapidly growing enrollment let to an expansion of the school in 1929.

The Riedel’s/Circle S Ranch bunkhouse is located in the headquarters area of the Circle S Ranch, west of Buena Vista in central Chaffee County, Colorado. The Riedel’s Ranch Bunkhouse took its current form in the ca. early-to-mid 1930s during the ownership of Jack W. and Harriet R. (Fleming) Riedel. After acquiring the property in 1930, Chicagoans Jack and Harriet Riedel established a dude ranch on the property previously utilized for ranching and agricultural production.

The Irving/Fletcher/Switzer Farm is located within a late nineteenth century farm headquarters on a 160-acre agricultural parcel in central Chaffee County, Colorado. The barn was initially constructed ca. 1886-1888 by James C. and Margaret S. Irving on their homestead claimed 1886. The Irvings became one of the most prosperous farmers in this section of Chaffee County, raising vegetables and livestock and adding more land to his holdings. The east addition ca. 1930 illustrates the custom of adding onto an early barn to meet new needs.

The Rifle Lodge No. 129, A.F & A.M. (Ancient Free & Accepted Masons), also known as the Rifle Masonic Lodge, is a two-story brick building built in 1914 located along Railroad Avenue in Rifle, CO. Rifle Lodge No. 129, A.F & A.M. is significant for its long-standing role as a place for fraternal organizational meetings and public and social gatherings for the larger community of Rifle. Additionally, for several months in 1918, the building also served as a temporary hospital for patients afflicted by the influenza pandemic of 1918-19.

Constructed 1912 by the Mount Princeton School District, the Maxwell Park School served as the district’s only facility in an area southwest of Buena Vista for more than two decades. As such the building exemplifies the importance Maxwell Park area farmers and ranchers saw in securing public education for their children, as they created and administered a school district and planned the construction of this building.

The Spring House is locally significant as one of the few surviving buildings dating to the initial settlement of Alma, Colorado, and the oldest of the two surviving buildings in Alma that historically functioned as hotels during the 1800s. Alma’s initial settlement period is defined as extending from ca.

The First Avenue Hotel was designed in 1906 by Denver architect Charles Quayle and completed in 1907 for his clients, the Fleming Brothers, longtime builders and developers along South Denver’s Broadway corridor. 

The Italian Renaissance Revival-style Eleventh Avenue Hotel, erected in 1903 as a single room occupancy hotel, provided housing for hundreds of Denver’s working-class citizens for over seventy years.
